Ipsy May 2015

So I skipped reviewing April’s Ipsy glam bag. I had good reason. First off, i’ve been very busy. Work and personal life keep me busy. And when I’m not busy, I’m lazy and tired! Second, April’s Ipsy bag was just horrible. The bag looked like it was made out of the same material as beach mats. The items itself we’re blah. I never used the concealer brush or the bright pink (think Barbie) nail polish. The blush was very pigmented (a little went a long way) and I don’t remember what the other items were.

Well okay I guess I ended being a mini review of it =)

May’s Ipsy glam bag I feel has redeemed itself. Granted I JUST got it today and haven’t tried a thing. The items I did get are things that I am very interested in trying.

The bag –
When I opened up the packaging, I got a whiff of floral scent. Like roses. I thought maybe I got a perfume sample in my bag. Turns out the smell was coming from the bag. It was actually nice and pleasant. I’d rather have a bag smell like roses than like plastic. The is made from a nice sturdy cloth. The front has an image of cosmetics with the tag line “VIP: Very Important Products”

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Lip Pencil + BONUS Revolution High-Color Lipgloss –
I love Urban Decay. I love their 24/7 eyeliners. I had no idea they had a lip liner. It’s actually a lip primer. You put it on first, then add lipstick or gloss. The sample came with two gloss shades. The weird thing about them is that they are packaged like gigantic medication pills (the kind where you poke the back of it to get the meds out). It sounds like that can be messy. Especially since the colors samples I got are on the dark side.

Pixi by Petra Beauty Bronzer –
I don’t know much about this brand other than I know they sell it at Target. This item came at the right time because I recently ran out of my Stella bronzer. I’m hoping this will look nice on my skin, but i’m a little worried. When swatching it, it has a high sheen to it.

BelláPierre Cosmetics Waterproof Mineral Gel Eyeliner Pencil –
My favorite eyeliners are the Urban Decay 24/7 and the Em Cosmetics Waterliner. I ran out of the waterliner and i’m almost done with the 24/7 pencil. I’m curious to see how this liner will work. I’ve used a kajal liner before but not a gel liner.

CoTZ Face Natural SPF 40 –
Moisturizing lightly tinted sunscreen. Score!

NUXE Rêve de Miel® Facial Cleansing and Make-Up Removing Gel –
Makeup removing gel? I’m used to using makeup removing wipes or liquids that are oil based. I’m excited to try it tonight and see how it works. Oh, and that rose scent I thought was from the bag, it was actually from this product =)

That’s it! I hope to be able to write more in this blog aside from ipsy reviews.

Ipsy March 2015

2015-03-11 17.35.50

Okay, I’ll be honest. I’m not really ready for a review of this month’s Ipsy bag. Some of the stuff I got I haven’t even tried yet, and I’m not sure if I will. I will do a quick post on my thoughts

First off, Ipsy recently updated their UI. Looks much better and easier to navigate. There are still some flaws to the site. The one thing I don’t like is that I’m forced to give a review after rating each product. Also, some questions say you’re allowed to select more than one answer, but when you click on answer, nothing happens.

The theme for this month’s bag is floral fantasy. I’m not sure how the items I got are related to floral.

Sexy Hair – Soy Renewal Creme Oil
I’ve used this a couple of times. I noticed by the end of the day my hair feels more oily than when I don’t apply this product. At first I was putting it all over my hair. Then I realized you only need to put it on the ends where it is the most dry. It does the job of nourishing your hair, but the last few days i’ve been forgetting to put it on before I blow dry my hair

Dr. Brandt Skincare – pores no more anti-aging mattifying lotion
It’s an anti-aging facial lotion. I’ve only used it once, and haven’t noticed a difference. I like to use it at night after I wash my face. My face gets really dry after washing it, so this lotion really helped my skin rehydrate. I don’t really like to use it in the morning since I use other products on my face such as a tinted moisturizer.

NYX Cosmetics – Butter Lipstick in Pops
It’s a nice lipstick. Keeps my lips moisturized. It did come off when I was drinking coffee. The only slight downside (if that) was that they sent me a color that was way too close to my natural lip color. I couldn’t tell if it was on. Maybe that’s a good thing?

MARSK – Mineral Eyeshadow in Fifty Shades
Really? “Fifty Shades”? So overplayed. This is a loose eye shadow powder. I haven’t used it yet. I’m not a huge fan of loose powders. It’s a darker shade of grey. I don’t know how to do a smokey eye so they only use I could get out of it is to use it as a liner. Even then, I just don’t really have an interest in using this.

Evelyn Iona Cosmetics – Concealer in Flawless
I love my Em Cosmetics concealer so when I got this, I was kinda hesitant to try it out. Would it be better than Em? It’s different. For one thing, this comes in a pot container. Usually concealers that come in that kind of container are thick. And with my long nails, I can’t really grab the product with my fingers. I need to use a concealer brush. It’s thick but not creamy. It’s a little too much on the yellow tones. The Em concealer is so much better.

It not a bad bag. 3 out of 5 things I would actually use. I just need to use them more often. I’ve been so busy lately that doing these reviews and really taking the time to try the products out are the last thing on my mind.

Ipsy February 2015

2015-02-17 19.06.53

With Valentine’s day in February, it’s only fitting that “Love” is this month’s theme.

Almost everything in this bag has some pink on it. First is the bag. It’s a very cute pink bag with a nice grey and white diamond pattern. It’s not flimsy or cheap looking. I could see myself using this bag for more that just carrying makeup (I use a previous ipsy bag as a coin purse!)

CARGO Cosmetics Mini Lip Gloss in Anguilla
I rarely use lip glosses or lip products. My husband hates kissing me if I have lipstick (even lip balm) on so I’ve gotten used to not bothering with my lips. If he’s out of town or if I’m out with friends, then I’ll use lip products. I’ll likely stash this away and forget I have this. Nonetheless, I do like it. It’s a nice nude pink on my lips. It’s creamy, but not too thick and it’s not sticky. It leaves a nice shine.

JOYA Composition No. 1 Parfum Oil
This one has a nice scent. I love the roller ball style. It makes it easy to carry in your purse. This sample is in a very small container. The label on packaging was already scratch up and worn out when I took it out of the ipsy bag. Unfortunately perfumes are another item that I rarely use. I have a few roller ball perfumes, but I always forget to use them.

Luxie Beauty Large Angled Face Brush 504
This is a soft angled blush brush. The handle is pink while the bristles are black with white tips. The bristles are so soft and really nice against my skin. It does a good job of apply blush to my cheeks and blending it out.

ModelCo BLUSH Cheek Powder in Peach Bellini – I’ve been using this every day since I got it. The color is great on my skin tone. It’s a peachy pink blush with a very subtle hint of gold shimmer. You have to look at it in bright light to see it. I don’t need to put too much on my cheeks.

‘Tini Beauty Rob Scheppy for ‘Tini Beauty Eyeshadow in Pearl Fizz – Another item i’ve been using every day since I got it. It’s a nude pearl shimmer eyeshadow. At first look, I thought this was going to be too close to my skin tone. It actually has good payoff. You can see the shimmer/sheen on my lids. It’s a very nice base color.

I’m really happy with this bag. Ipsy did a good job with this month’s bag compared to the previous bags I received. I’m glad I didn’t cancel this subscription.

13 inch Cambridge Satchel Review

Early last year, I wanted a new bag, but didn’t want to pay designer price for them. I got a cross body bag from target. It was big enough to fit everything i needed. It cheap and almost perfect. It also lasted less than a year. It had a magnetic closure that was some how attached fabric of the purse (it didn’t look like it was sewn on). Some how that ripped off. I tried to take it to my friend’s shop, but they told me they don’t have the tools to fix it. It was so cheap that it just wasn’t worth the time and money to fix it.

My bag broke right when I was out of a job. Perfect timing right? I kept looking online and in stores, but couldn’t find anything I liked or that could fit my needs. I wanted something that wasn’t gonna break on me within a year, but I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on it.

I saw a picture my cousin posted on instagram of her bag. It was a Cambridge Satchel. It was really cute. I did more research on the Cambridge Satchel Company. I found myself frequently going to their website and checking out everyone else’s instagram pictures with the hashtag #cambridgesatchel. I looked up video reviews on YouTube. I knew I had to make the investment. I told myself, if I find a new job, I will get a satchel.

Sure enough I did find a job. I found one weeks before my birthday.

2015-01-22 23.03.35

I got the 13 inch Cambridge Satchel ‘Batchel’ with magnetic closure in a classic red. It’s embossed with my nickname ‘kero’. It arrived a week before my birthday. Overall shipping time was about a week which is really fast considering it was coming from the UK to California.

The Cambridge Satchel Company is all about quality even down to the packaging. The bag is packaged in a nice fabric sack. You could use that sack alone for other things. The sack is then placed in a really nice box. I could have kept it and used it for other things too, but I decided not to keep it.

The bag itself is no joke. Real genuine leather. And I hate the smell of leather. I never liked going inside leather stores because of the smell. But with that smell, you knew it was the real deal. I knew I was going to need to let the bag air out so it wouldn’t smell as much. The bag is very sturdy and made of a stiff leather. Those who reviewed the bag weren’t kidding about how the bag really needs to be broken in. I got a magnetic closure instead of the traditional buckle closure. Most reviewers complained that the most annoying thing about the bag is getting stuff in and out of it. It has real buckles which takes time to undo. Reviewers say they leave it unbuckled for easier access to their items. If you do that, it doesn’t look as pretty and can still leave your stuff vulnerable (especially if you’re in an area where pickpocketing is common). With the magnetic closure, you don’t have to worry about it. The bag looks like the traditional with the buckles, but you don’t have to undo them. The magnet makes it really easy to open. The front has a small window pocket where you could put a business card there, but I leave it alone. It’s more of a decorative statement to me. The back has the Cambridge Satchel logo embossed.

2015-01-24 13.13.43

I was debating if I should get the 11 inch or the 13 inch. I was worried that anything bigger than the 11 inch would look too big and bulky especially with my petite frame. At the same time, I thought the 11 inch might not fit everything I need. The website warns you that due to the shape and sewing of the bag, you actually lose a few inches inside. I went with the 13 inch and I’m glad I did. It’s the perfect size. It fits all I need and it doesn’t look big on me. The straps are removable and adjustable. Even using the last hole on the strap, it hangs low for my short frame, but it still looks good. You could probably punch a few more holes if needed, but I don’t want to ruin my new bag.

2015-02-14 13.05.09

I’m able to fit a lot of stuff in it. On a recent trip to the city I had with me my iPad air, my giant wallet, small tote of makeup, coin purse, 2 phones (my Moto X 2nd Gen and my work phone which is an iPhone 5) my badge, bottled water, keys, and a couple of reusable bags. With it closed, it doesn’t look bulky or bulging. it also doesn’t feel that heavy. I carried it cross body style with me while walking around downtown San Francisco with no problems.

I’ve had it now for about a month. The leather has been broken in. It’s softer, but still firm. It’s not hard as a rock like when I first got it. I have two scratches as well as several smudge marks on my bag. The scratches are annoying, but not that noticeable unless you look for them.

2015-02-14 13.19.26

2015-02-05 06.41.10

Only one weekend I didn’t use it due to rain. I really should get some sort of leather protectant. Some reviews mentioned that especially with the red bags, the color on the leather can transfer to clothing, specifically around the strap. I have not noticed that, thank goodness.

Overall I love this bag. It can hold everything I need, and then some. The magnetic feature make is really easy to get stuff in and out of. I love the color. It’s a vibrant red that really makes the bag a statement piece. I’m seriously thinking of getting the 11 inch in yellow or blue just to have. I think it would be nice to have a smaller bag for date night or for a quick trip to the store. Hubby wasn’t too thrilled with that idea. These bags aren’t that cheap. Embossing a symbol (either a bicycle or a heart) is free. Custom embossing your name is $10 per letter. Sometimes they will do a promotion and offer free embossing. If you are in the U.S, you may be hit with a duty/tax charge from the carrier. We got a $27 bill from FedEx because the bag was shipped from the UK. I wish they would have included it with the order. Was a bit of a shock for us.

I plan to visit London either this year or next. I will definitely make a stop at one of their stores and hopefully get another one to add to my collection.

On this day 2 years ago, this blog was born

Screen Shot 2015-02-15 at 11.37.04 PM

Really? It’s been 2 years?? I’ve been keeping this up a lot better than when I had a live journal account. But even then, it could be better. My last post was about a month ago.

Work has been keeping me busy and that’s a good thing. I’m still learning a lot and having fun at the same time. My contract is for 3 months. As of now, i’m at the half way point. I think I’m doing well and I hope my manager agrees and renews my contract once it’s up. Trying not to get hopes up.

Yesterday was Valentine’s day. We generally don’t celebrate it not only because all the restaurants are packed that night, but because the week before is our dating anniversary and we’d rather celebrate that. Although now that we’re married, the dating anniversary isn’t such a big deal anymore. We still acknowledge it. We didn’t do much for Valentine’s day. Spent most of it running errands and ate dinner at home. It was sweet of hubby to try to make dinner for us. He doesn’t cook so this was a huge deal for him. He wasn’t even “cooking”. He put together seaweed salad, cold tofu, and salmon rolls (with not rice since we’re trying to be good with carb intake). He did a good job! I’m proud of him =)

I’m working on my next review and hope to have that up soon. This time it’s not a subscription review. Stay tuned.

Ipsy January 2015

2015-01-19 09.34.25

It’s a new year and a chance for a fresh start. That’s this month’s theme at Ipsy. Simple everyday must haves for the new year.

The bag itself is pretty nice. I’m not sure what the material is, but it seems firm and durable. Once side is blue, the other side is white. I can see the white side getting easily dirty.

Hikari Cosmetics Mechanical Eye Liner in Storm – It’s an okay eyeliner. I have no need for a grey colored liner, but you never know. The formula isn’t that creamy. The tip is pretty sharp so I found myself being able to do a wing liner without the help of an angled brush! Or maybe i’m just getting good at applying eyeliner. Mechanical eyeliners are nice in that you just twist up to get more product rather than having to sharpen a pencil.

La Fresh Eco-Beauty Be Good. Good Day. Day Moisturizer – When I look at the packaging, I cant help but think it’s lotion in a gogurt squeeze bottle. Luckily this is just the sample packaging. Their website shows the full size version is in a traditional cylinder container. I was a bit nervous with this product. Lotions tend to be greasy and with my oily/combo skin, which is why I use the dramatically moisturizing gel from Clinique. This is a really nice moisturizer that does the job. I’ve been using it every day since I got it and so far i’m impressed with the results.

(MALIN+GOETZ) Mojito Lip Balm – It is what it is, a lip balm. It’s actually nice. Some lip balms tend to dry out my lips, but this one doesn’t. I’ve only used it a couple of times, and so far it’s not bad. It’s not spectacular either.

Manna Kadar Cosmetics Sheer Glo – It’s some kind of sheer cream. You can use it as a highlighter on your cheeks or put it all over for a nice glow. I don’t have an interest to glow. I used it a couple of times but it doesn’t work for me.

Pacifica Natural Mineral Coconut Eye Shadow – I got a Pacifica duo eyeshadow a few months ago and liked it. So they sent me another one. This time it’s a single eyeshadow in a shimmering brown color. I had a hard time taking it out of the packaging. I thought the box was a bit to small for it. When I finally got it out, I found out they glued it to the box. There was sticky residue on the back of the eyeshadow container. It’s a nice color, but you really need to pack it on to see the payoff.

Overall it’s a good bag. Nothing horrible, but nothing amazing either.

Busy busy bee

2015 has been super busy for me. Right after the holidays I went back to work.

It’s a new job, with new people, in a new and totally different environment. I really do have culture shock. I went from a staff of 20 to a staff of several thousand. I’m on week two and still adjusting, but it’s okay. Ive been told it’s normal. In a way, this job is different from my last and that’s a good thing. Everyone I’ve met has been so friendly and helpful. So far I’m loving it. The first day of work really did feel like the first day of school. Something I hadn’t experienced in a very long time. I take the shuttle to work (thank god!) and carry my belongings in a backpack. Someone on the shuttle going home today joked, “School’s out!” Leaving a conference room after a meeting kinda feels like leaving a classroom. At the end of the day, I am happy and thankful for this opportunity. I can’t wait to see where this adventure takes me.

Because of this new chapter in my life, I haven’t done much cooking lately. Not good. Hubby’s getting back on the low carb diet. Me not so much. Thanks to the holidays, all the weight we lost in the last 4 months, we gained about half of it back. We need to fix that but it’s hard when you now have access to free food. Not to mention we’re still going through all the holiday candy we got in our stockings. I love #keroscookingadventures, and I really want to continue that. Just need to get back in the rhythm of things.

Got my January Ipsy bag this week. I’m hoping to get pics and review up this weekend.

That’s all for now. Until next time.

Goodbye 2014, Hello 2015!

2013 was a pretty crappy year for me, so I was hoping 2014 would be much better… and it was!

In 2014

– We bought our first home. It’s a small 2 bedroom condo, but it works for us. We frequented The Home Depot almost every weekend to make our house a home.

– Traveled. Been to LA 3 times and traveled to Maui over the summer.

– Lilo continues to be Lilo. Cute, fluffy and well behaved. She did have to have eye surgery to remove more ingrown hairs, but other than that she’s been okay

– Both hubby and I went through job changes. All for the better.

– My stress level has gone down. I let go of the things that were causing me bad stress and it feels good

– We did hit some road blocks this year, but it only made us stronger and more motivated to be better.

In 2015

I’m really excited to see what 2015 has in store for me. I start a new job on the 5th. I’m not gonna say where but I will be in a much better place personally, professionally and financially for once. Hubby continues to succeed in his new job.

I’m also hoping we can go on another major trip. This time to England and France! Hubby and I agreed to go on one more big trip before we even think about having kids. I would like to go to Europe by the end of 2015.

Kero’s cooking adventures will continue! I love trying new recipes out! We’re also going to go back on to our low carb diet as soon as all the holiday food is gone from this house.

That’s it for now! Cheers! Have a safe and fun New Years Eve!

Ipsy December 2014

DSC05765

This month’s theme is called “Thinking of You”. At first I thought it was called Brave Souls because that’s what I saw on the card. Either way, the theme does not work for me. There’s nothing brave about this collection. It’s all basic stuff. If they are thinking of me, they must think i’m a plain Jane.

DSC05773

The bag itself is so blah. It’s black with a pink Ipsy heart on the zipper chain. It is made from a nice sturdy fabric which is nice. I could use it as a makeup bag or a pencil case.

DSC05766

Beauty Without Cruelty, A.H.A. 3% Facial Cleanser – I’ve only tried it once. It’s a nice cleaner that leaves your face feeling clean and refreshed. To me, it smelled a little like lemon-lime soda.

DSC05768

Pixi by Petra Fairy Dust – It’s loose eyeshadow powder that’s way too close to my skin tone. I packed it on and can’t even tell I have it on. There’s no sheen or shimmer. I guess in a way it does even out my skin tone on my lids but that’s it. The applicator is an interesting concept that needs work. It has a sponge tip that’s not that soft, but at least you don’t have to use your hands or a brush to get the product in. When I first opened it, I made sure to open it over the sink. Sure enough some of the product fell out of the container. Overall, not liking this product

DSC05771

NYX Cosmetics Butter Lip Balm – I love NYX. They’ve got some really great products for dirt cheap! This is a tinted lip balm in Red Velvet. The formula is nice. It keeps my lips moist and leave a slight tint.

DSC05769

tarte deluxe lights, camera, lashes™ 4-in-1 mascara – My collection of mascaras is growing and that’s not a good thing. I usually don’t wear mascara. This one clumps my lashes. I don’t know if it’s the formula, the brush or the combination of the two. I just don’t care for it

DSC05772

Swissco Electroplated Eyelash Curler – I don’t know what’s so special about this eyelash curler other than it’s purple. It does the job right. I already have two eyelash curlers from Shu Uemura so I don’t need this one, but it’s a nice one.

Overall this bag is way too simple, way too boring.

Kero’s Cooking Adventues – Italian Chicken Bake

I found this recipe on Pinterest. It’s chicken baked with pesto, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese. That’s it! Super simple.

Recipe: The Pinning Mama

First thing I did was spray my glass 9×13 baking dish with a non stick spray. I also pre-heated the oven to 400 degrees F.

IMG_8339

The recipe didn’t ask for it, but I added salt and pepper to the chicken and slightly pounded it for tenderness. I don’t have a meat tenderizer so I just laid a piece of wax paper over the chicken and pounded it with the back of my knife.

IMG_8343

The chicken was then placed on the baking dish. Here comes the layering.

Pesto sauce (I got store bought sauce, but if you can make your own, more power to ya! I don’t have a food processor otherwise I would totally made that from scratch). It was a small jar of sauce so I used it all

IMG_8345

Tomatoes. These are roma tomatoes. I used 3 of them and sliced them into thick pieces.

IMG_8347

Cheese. Lots of mozzarella cheese. I think fresh mozzarella would have been better but I’m on a budget. Pre-shredded it is.

IMG_8349

Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes until chicken is fully cooked and the juices run clear (Internal temp should be 165 degrees F).

IMG_8352

After it was done cooking at added a bit more cheese for the hell of it.

Yum!
